A Honeymoon You'll Both Love in Puerto Rico
Honeymoon Ideas and Answers - Brides - April 2011
RELAX Start your honeymoon off with a few days of blissful unwinding on the island of Vieques. Located just eight miles east of the main island, Vieques is accessible by ferry from Fajardo or—even easier—via puddle-jumper from the San Juan airport. The island has only recently begun to be developed (it was used for U.S. military operations until 2003), so there are still plenty of unspoiled beaches to be explored and enjoyed. Some of the best include easy-to-access Sun Bay and Red Beach. Blue Beach and Green Beach are a bit more off the beaten path, but the reward is that you may have these little gems all to yourselves. The recent development also means that, while there aren't many lodging options on the island, those that do exist are newer (and cooler) than most. Cases in point: the just-opened W Retreat & Spa, and the modern, minimalist lofts at architect John Hix's Hix Island House.
Island life is very mellow—you can go for an easy snorkel around the coral reefs or search for shells and other treasures as you stroll the beach. Still, taking a snooze (alone or together) in a hammock could easily be the most "exhilarating" activity on your list. During your stay in Vieques you should motivate one night to tour Mosquito Bay, one of the world's brightest bioluminescent bays, at dusk. Jump in and you'll find yourself surrounded by glowing microorganisms. Don't worry, they're harmless, and you don't feel them, you see them—it's pretty spectacular.
